Solubility

One of the most noticeable differences between the two is their solubility in water. Fully hydrolyzed PVA is soluble in hot water, but it’s a bit of a pain to dissolve in cold water. You kinda have to heat it up to around 80 – 90°C to get it to dissolve properly. The reason for this is those evenly – spaced hydroxyl groups in the fully hydrolyzed PVA. They form strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules, but only at higher temperatures can the water molecules break into the polymer structure and make it dissolve.

Partially hydrolyzed PVA, though, is much more soluble in cold water. The remaining acetate groups in its structure act as a sort of "lubricant," making it easier for water molecules to interact with the polymer chain even at room temperature. This makes it a great choice when you need a quick – dissolving polymer solution, like in some instant adhesives or inks.

Film – Forming Properties

Both fully and partially hydrolyzed PVA are good at forming films, but they have different characteristics.

Fully hydrolyzed PVA forms very strong, tough, and water – resistant films. The high density of hydroxyl groups allows for extensive hydrogen bonding between the polymer chains, which gives the film its strength. These films are often used in applications where you need a barrier against moisture or other substances, like in food packaging.

Partially hydrolyzed PVA, however, forms more flexible and less water – resistant films. The presence of acetate groups reduces the intermolecular forces between the polymer chains, making the film more pliable. This makes it suitable for applications where flexibility is key, like in some textile finishes or in the production of water – soluble bags.

Adhesive Properties

In terms of adhesives, the two types of PVA also show distinct differences.

Fully hydrolyzed PVA has excellent adhesive strength, especially when bonding to hydrophilic (water – loving) surfaces. The hydroxyl groups can form strong hydrogen bonds with the surface, creating a very secure bond. It’s often used in wood adhesives and in laminating applications where a durable bond is required.

Partially hydrolyzed PVA, while it still has adhesive properties, is generally weaker in terms of bonding strength compared to fully hydrolyzed PVA. But it has better initial tack, which means it can stick to surfaces quickly. This makes it a good choice for applications where you need a fast – sticking adhesive, like in some paper – to – paper bonding or in temporary adhesives.

Applications

The differences in properties between fully and partially hydrolyzed PVA lead to different applications.

Fully hydrolyzed PVA is widely used in the textile industry for sizing yarns. The strong film – forming and adhesive properties help protect the yarn during the weaving process.
